Assessment, monitoring, and mitigation of the impact of microplastics on water treatment systems and industrial processes.
Microplastics (MPs) are a growing threat affecting the entire water cycle, from the environment to human consumption. With discharges potentially doubling by 2060, the textile sector stands out as one of the main sources due to the release of microfibres that current treatments cannot always filter out.
IMPACT project's mission is to detect, characterize and mitigate the presence of microplastics in water and sludge. The initiative started in 2025 and has a duration of 26 months. Overall, IMPACT seeks to protect human and environmental health through:
- Advanced detection: Development of sampling protocols and representative analysis techniques.
- Prevention at source: research into sustainable textile manufacturing processes to reduce the release of microfibres.
- Risk assessment: toxicological and chemical analysis of plastic-associated compounds to guarantee safe solutions.
With an industrial and scientific approach, IMPACT validates alternatives that prevent the exposure of ecosystems and people to these persistent pollutants.
This project has been submitted to the 2025 call for Strategic Cooperation Projects by the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI-IVACE+i Innovación). It is funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund programme for the Valencian Community 2021-2027 (file no. INNEST/2025/590 for GOMSL and INNEST/2025/222 for GOSER).
