Evaluation of IoT Solutions for a Streamlined Communications Infrastructure in Smart Cities and Smart Buildings

The IoT4Cities project focuses on the evaluation and optimisation of IoT solutions for the comprehensive sensorisation of buildings and urban environments. Its main objective is to improve the efficient management of resources and services in areas such as water, lighting, parking, waste management and health control through the implementation of smart sensors.

 

Specific solutions include Legionella detection and monitoring systems in water networks, automated control of public and private lighting, sensors to manage occupancy in indoor or outdoor spaces, and devices to optimise waste collection through sensors installed in containers. The initiative seeks to streamline existing communications infrastructures, ensuring adequate coverage according to the environment, including large cities, industrial areas and dispersed areas, while promoting interoperable solutions that enable integrated and sustainable management in both Smart Cities and Smart Buildings.


Key aspects for the development of the IoT4Cities project in the sensorisation of buildings and urban environments:

 

  1. Analysis of Available IoT Technologies: Evaluate technologies such as NB-IoT, LoRaWAN, Sigfox, 5G, Wi-Fi 6/6E and Ethernet, considering their suitability for different applications including water, lighting, parking, waste and health control. Compare aspects such as coverage, bandwidth, energy consumption, cost and compatibility with dense or dispersed urban environments.
  2. Coverage and Environment: Map urban areas, including large and medium-sized cities, rural areas and industrial zones. Identify physical obstacles, such as tall buildings and infrastructure, and environmental factors, such as electromagnetic interference, that may affect signal quality and sensor performance.
  3. Infrastructure Streamlining: Design hybrid architectures that integrate multiple technologies according to the specific needs of each area, such as drinking water monitoring, lighting control or waste management. Implement gateways or concentrators capable of managing several technologies at a single point in order to reduce redundancies.
  4. Interoperability and Scalability: Ensure that devices and platforms are interoperable to facilitate future integration. Plan expansions without replacing the entire existing infrastructure, enabling flexible system evolution.
  5. Integration with Smart Building Solutions: Leverage common sensors used in both buildings and public spaces, such as air quality, temperature or occupancy sensors. Centralise data management to facilitate integrated analysis that supports smart decision-making in both areas.
  6. Cost and Resource Optimisation: Minimise the number of redundant devices through integrated solutions. Streamline the use of radio spectrum and energy resources to reduce operating costs and improve system sustainability.
