Understanding, Monitoring and Remediating the Spread of Chemical, Microbiological and Plastic Pollution in DWTPs
Drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) are a primary actor in responding to the deterioration of water quality, as they represent the final barrier before human exposure to pollutants present in water.
The NIAGARA project aims to understand the phenomenon of chemical, microbiological and plastic pollution distribution in the water purification process, through the development of specific biosensors, novel water treatment systems and modelling of pollutant transport in a drinking water distribution network.
To achieve this, the planned lines of action of the project include:
- Development of tailored solutions: Designing specific tools for the detection, removal and prediction of pollutant spread.
- Integrated pilot demonstrator: Integrating all the developed solutions into a pilot-scale demonstrator. This unified system will enable treatment plants to effectively monitor and eliminate chemical and biological pollution in real time.
- Risk management: Creating and implementing management actions to assess and minimise the risks associated with these pollutants in water.
The project integrates the work of partners from the water industry sector, academia, public administrations and policymakers.
This project has been submitted to the HORIZON EUROPE call under reference HORIZON-CL6-2022-ZEROPOLLUTION-01. It is funded by the European Union through the Horizon Research and Innovation Actions, and has a total contribution of 3.601.443,00 € https://www.niagara-project.eu/
