FAQs

What microbiological tests are mandatory for a cosmetic product before it is placed on the market?

Microbiological testing of cosmetic products forms part of the safety assessment required under Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. A cosmetic microbiology laboratory performs microbiological quality control, including the enumeration of mesophilic aerobic microorganisms, moulds and yeasts, and the detection of pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans.

Which cosmetic products can be tested microbiologically?

Creams, gels, toothpastes, mouthwashes and other finished cosmetic products can be tested, as well as raw materials and non-woven fabrics such as wet wipes and sanitary pads. Each analysis is tailored to the type of product and the reference standards applicable to each microorganism. The cost of the analysis varies depending on the parameters required. At our water analysis laboratory, we prepare quotations for all regions across Spain, ensuring compliance with Royal Decree 3/2023.
