Innovation and knowledge in action in consumption management.

Ángel Manel Casaña’s Master’s Thesis boosts smart water management.

At GOservicios, we believe that the continuous learning of our teams is the foundation of innovation. That is why we are proud to share the knowledge from the Master’s Thesis (TFM) of our colleague Ángel Manel Casaña from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, a project that not only reflects his talent and effort but also demonstrates our commitment to integrating new ways of analyzing and managing data to deliver value to society.

The study, titled “Customer segmentation based on water consumption habits in urban environments using smart meter big data,” opens new avenues for understanding and optimizing the relationship between people, water use, and resource planning in cities.

Data that tell stories: the value of smart meters

We live in a context where data is a key tool for decision-making. In our sector, smart meters represent a unique opportunity: they not only record hourly

consumption but also allow the identification of patterns, detection of anomalies, and anticipation of needs.

Ángel analyzed almost 1 trillion consumption records over three years (2021, 2022, and 2023). After a rigorous process of cleaning, organizing, and segmenting, he managed to classify customers into five main types:

  • Inactive: households without active consumption.
  • Constant: regular consumption throughout the year.
  • Non-summer: consumption that decreases during summer months.
  • Summer increase: customers who significantly increase their consumption in summer.
  • Touristic: associated with vacation homes, showing highly marked patterns during peak season.

This segmentation exercise is not an end in itself but a means to better understand the reality of each territory and anticipate more efficient management scenarios.

Our role: applied knowledge for the community

At GOservicios, we actively promote that our professionals train themselves and apply their learning in the day-to-day operations of the company. Ángel’s TFM is an example of how individual training translates into collective progress.

The project combines data analysis techniques, statistical complexity reduction, and classification algorithms. Beyond the technical aspects, the key point is its ability to transform data into useful knowledge for water management.

As Ángel highlighted during the presentation: “Customer segmentation based on consumption data allows us to better understand the user base, detect anomalous patterns, and in the future, design alarm systems or personalized responsible consumption plans.”

This demonstrates that learning obtained in an academic environment can —and should— become practical solutions that reinforce our vision: to provide a service that is increasingly intelligent, sustainable, and people-oriented.

Looking forward: innovation with real impact

The study does not stop at the current classification. Future lines include expanding to more territories, identifying minority patterns, creating personalized real-time alarms, and evaluating the evolution of each customer group over the years.

At GOservicios, we reaffirm our commitment to innovation, convinced that the talent of our teams, combined with responsible use of technology, is the best way to continue transforming challenges into opportunities.

Ángel Manel Casaña’s Master Thesis reflects this spirit: learning, practical application, and positive impact. Every individual advance is also a step that strengthens our collective work and drives us to grow together.
