advancing in the digitalization of the sanitation network in Castellón de la Plana
At GOservicios, we believe that technology plays a fundamental role in building more sustainable, efficient cities that are prepared for the challenges of the future. Therefore, we have taken an important step in modernising the urban water cycle by successfully completing the installation of new monitoring systems at wastewater discharge points in Castellón de la Plana.
This project is part of the PERTE initiatives (Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation) aimed at promoting the digitalisation of strategic infrastructure, representing a significant step forward in how we manage and monitor the sanitation network. Thanks to this action, it will be possible to have continuous information on the network's behaviour, facilitating more efficient wastewater management and contributing to greater environmental sustainability
A smarter network thanks to real-time monitoring
Our participation in the project has consisted of installing monitoring devices at 37 strategic points along Castellón de la Plana's sanitation network. This equipment allows key parameters to be controlled, such as water levels, flow rates, circulation speed, and various quality indicators, providing a more comprehensive and accurate view of the infrastructure's operation.
Additionally, we have incorporated six turbidity probes, four automatic samplers, and three weather stations that complement the information collected by the system. This entire suite of devices will generate data that will subsequently be integrated into the management platforms used by the company responsible for operating the network.
Thanks to this information, it will be possible to detect incidents more quickly, optimise maintenance work, and improve response capacity in situations that could affect the system's operation.
The action will also allow network overflows to be monitored and provide precise information on their frequency and volume, facilitating compliance with the requirements established by the new European directives on wastewater management.
In this regard, Vicente Baguena Año, head of project implementation and wastewater sensing at GOservicios, highlights:
“The technology we have installed is aimed at capturing key data to monitor overflows. This makes it possible to justify and rigorously comply with the information required by the new European directive, controlling the number of episodes and the exact amount of water that has been discharged.”
Overcoming technical challenges without compromising safety and quality
Installing equipment in sanitation infrastructure is a complex task that requires rigorous planning and highly specialised execution. In this project, one of the main challenges has been completing the work within particularly demanding deadlines, while simultaneously guaranteeing the quality of the installations and the safety of all professionals involved. As Vicente Baguena Año explains: “Installing equipment at 37 points along Castellón’s sanitation network, while avoiding incidents and meeting the established deadlines, has been a major challenge that we have successfully managed to complete.”
The works took place in environments of great technical complexity, including large-diameter collectors and spaces with particularly demanding access conditions. This reality has allowed us to consolidate working methodologies aimed at combining technical excellence, operational efficiency, and maximum safety.
As Vicente Baguena Año points out, this approach has successfully resolved one of the main technological challenges of the operation: “We have managed to get the equipment to perform the necessary calculations directly in the field and transmit all that information stably to the management platform. It was a major challenge, and the result has been very satisfying.”
Preparing the infrastructure of the future
The completion of this work represents a new step forward in the digitalisation of Castellón’s hydraulic infrastructure. Beyond the installation of new devices, the project lays the foundations for a smarter, more predictive, and efficient management of the sanitation network.
